Specification04 / 14

Five model classes, each with its own state shape, dynamics and default bounds.

A class describes the mechanics a specification must expose. It grants no musical meaning and no aesthetic validity on its own.

Coupled oscillators

Phase oscillators on a graph, integrated forward under a coupling constant. Coherence drifts between ordered and disordered, and the order parameter is the natural control value for register and voice count. Slow, drone-shaped output.

Cellular automaton

A discrete lattice under a fixed local rule, fully specified by the rule number and the initial row. Percussive and rhythmic output: structure appears without being composed.

Granular synthesis

A grain cloud evolving under a stochastic field. Density function, pitch-shift range and grain envelope are the design choices; the source corpus and its licence are the sourced data. Textural output. Citation: Roads, Microsound (ISBN 978-0-262-18215-7).

Physical-modeling resonator

A network of coupled resonators, each with its own excitation and decay, exchanging energy with its neighbours under damping. Struck nodes are sounded by plucked-string synthesis. Citation: Karplus and Strong, “Digital Synthesis of Plucked-String and Drum Timbres” (10.2307/3680062).

Stochastic process

A formalized process stepped once per tick with entropy from the σ-seeded generator. The named distribution (a Markov chain over scale degrees, an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck field, a Poisson point process, or sieve theory) is declared in the specification and recorded as sourced data, along with its parameters. Markov chains are one technique inside this class, not a class of their own.
